With a premiership winning rugby league side, community leaders have had little difficulty in attracting Peak Hill's Aboriginal youth to attend training sessions. But the Red Dust program goes further than the weekend game. Fathers and uncles use the opportunity of coaching the boys to pass on lessons relevant to their passage into adulthood. In camps and time away together, they offer advice and friendship that gives young men confidence in facing the world off the field. It especially helps them develop the self awareness necessary to take on their responsibilities to their family and community, as well as to themselves.
